The upcoming trends for 2019 can be summed up in just a few words: bright, cozy, and fun. Neutral colors will be accented with rich, natural hues. The focus on comfort means bedrooms and bathrooms are getting even more plush. And much to the chagrin of traditionalists everywhere, open floor plans are here to stay. Let’s take a closer look at the trends in home design for 2019.

Color Trends

Pantone’s color of the year for 2019 stands in contrast to 2018’s bright ultra violet- this is the year of Living Coral. Pantone describes it as, “sociable and spirited, the engaging nature of Living Coral welcomes and encourages lighthearted activity…[and] symboliz[es] our innate need for optimism and joyful pursuits.” Sounds like the perfect color for a busy family’s kitchen. Sherwin William’s chose a more muted hue, Cavern Clay describing it as “bohemian, yet totally refined,” and Behr’s color of 2019 is Blueprint, a straightforward bright blue.

Furniture Trends

2019 is made for relaxation. Many bedrooms may be seeing remodels to make them, “more womb-like. [With]…so many things going on in the world, we desire to feel nurtured and protected when we are sleeping and/or relaxing.” Headboards can be padded and upholstered in luxurious fabrics that are both cozy and add a colorful focal point. Bathrooms will be enhanced with destination tubs. Shifting away from the utilitarian and functional, “80 percent of home remodelers [are] planning to upgrade their bathtubs. A soaking tub was the most popular option.”

Layout Trends

Many have called for their demise, but open floor plans are here to stay. By combining the kitchen and living space, homeowners can entertain easily. Because, as we all know, kitchens, even small ones, are the heart of every home. Formal dining rooms are being replaced by, “an enlarged breakfast nook adjacent to the kitchen.” Even though the breakfast nook is smaller, you can still set it off with pendant lights and a different wall color or flooring.

2019 is a year where you can choose your own trends and chart your own course. Individuality has never been more popular- now’s the time to renovate your home so it reflects your own personal style.
